The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a 30,000-acre protected area located in the South San Francisco Bay, California. Established in 1974, it was the nation's first urban National Wildlife Refuge. It preserves essential wetlands and habitats for migratory birds, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and educational activities, with main visitor centers in Fremont and Alviso. The refuge extends across Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, primarily surrounding the Dumbarton Bridge. Portable restrooms are available for public use.
ACCESSIBILITY
There are two main trails (La Riviere Marsh and Tidelands Trail) with a mild trek along dirt path hills.
PETS
No pets are allowed on the premises.
DOWNSIDES
This area is beautiful in spring but can get muddy due to rainy season. Due to less trees in the open area, it can get pretty sunny if not during golden hour.
