5 MATERNITY STYLING TIPS

You just found out you're expecting a baby, now what? Amidst all the frantic planning for the arrival of your little one, the last thing you want to do is go shopping, right? We want to help alleviate your worries and give you five styling tips to make your maternity photoshoot perfect!

#1. COLOR SCHEME

First, we need to think about your color scheme. We always suggest going for soft, neutral colors for the romantic and sweet look but we've also had some mamas rock some bold colors, too!

LIGHT & NEUTRAL TONES:

You can never go wrong with light colors BUT they can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. Go for textures which is a more forgiving fabric - like lace to hide any "problem areas".

BOLD & VIBRANT COLORS:

Some bold, bright colors can cause unnatural skin-tones to your photos (i.e. bright orange, red or yellow, neons) but if you know how to rock it, it can make you pop from the background! When searching for outfits, keep in mind what works best with your skin tone and hair coloring. These expectant mamas knew what looked best with their coloring and it shined through in their photos!

PATTERNS & PRINTS:

Patterns can either be a blessing or a curse. If they're too tiny, it can be hard to see or may get too busy. If the print is too large, it can be distracting and take the focus off of you. We want to make YOU the star! Don't be afraid to wear patterns, just look for subtle prints or patterns that will flatter your body.

#2. THE OUTFIT

When we think of the "perfect" maternity outfit, we imagine a long, flowy, and soft maxi dress. We know that may not work for everyone and want to encourage you to let your personal style shine! Pick an outfit that best resembles you!

LONG & LOOSE:

Long, flowy maxi dresses are our go-to in selecting the perfect dress. The long fabric shapes your baby bump in a flattering way, creating movement and interest, while giving you something to do with your hands.

FORM FITTING & CASUAL:

If you're not into long dresses, another way of emphasizing the bump is to go for a form fitting dress that hugs your curves. Add some layers such as a shawl or chunky sweater, or find a dress that has interesting elements like ribbed fabric or cuffed sleeves.

And if you want the more casual look, find some comfy jeans and pair it with a pretty top or oversized sweater.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Choose comfortable, practical shoes.

Since you'll be on your feet most of the time, be sure to wear comfortable shoes that won't cause you pain.

#3. HAIR & MAKEUP

Take some time to get your makeup and hair done! Because, WHY NOT? How often do you get to feel pampered and look your best? And while you're at it, get some glamour shots! Make sure your makeup doesn't take over. We only want to enhance your natural mama-glow, not cover it entirely.

Additional Tip: DON'T FORGET YOUR NAILS!

The majority of the time, we will be posing your hands over your baby bump. The last thing you want to see are chipped nails! We suggest choosing neutral colors that will go well with your outfit.

#4. ACCESSORIZE

Throw in a hat, color pop of jewelry or a flower crown to add creative interest to your photos!

#5. THE DAD DILEMMA

Through all of the hustle and bustle of planning your session with us, we don't want to leave dad out of the picture - he's in the photos too! For the men, we recommend wearing a neutral button down shirt (i.e. chambray blue, gray, cream, etc.), and either jeans or tan pants.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

We want you to have the best photoshoot experience with us, and outfits play a huge part in that.
